Chat-based workspace in Office 365

About Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a chat-based workspace within Microsoft 365, which enables users to view and collaborate on documents directly within the application, participate in voice and video conference calls, view full conversation histories and email-style conversation threads, and more. Teams has replaced Skype for Business as Microsoft's online meeting solution.

Microsoft Teams can be customized to suit each individual team, with users able to create tabs for frequently accessed documents or regularly-used cloud services. Integrations with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, SharePoint, Power BI, Delve, and Planner are all built into Microsoft Teams, allowing users to access and collaborate on a range of files. Skype for Business integration facilitates video and voice conference calls between users, connectors can be used to pull in notifications and updates from a range of third party services including GitHub and Twitter, and the Microsoft Bot Framework is also supported, bringing intelligent bots into the team environment.

Using Microsoft Teams has been an amazing experience. With having less memory and energy as an active process, it is good to use MS Teams as one of your main applications for work/school.

It has all the needed features to utilize and maximize the video conferencing and user storage aspects for your tasks and meetings.

    Pros

This is one of the best video conferencing platforms out there. Not only can you communicate with people through video but the storage and organization aspect definitely enhances the experience of a session.

Suitable not only for students/young users but also for administrators who would want to organize their work and share their files and documents. The capability of adding on bots or more features brings it to a whole new level as well.

The chat feature accesses all people registered within the organization. By typing the name, you get to message and communicate with said person.

The level of access has also been proven useful.

    Cons

I do find some notification settings hard to control when you are part of multiple channels.

I do not get to fully utilize the assignment aspect of the Microsoft Teams.

The video features on it may do a bit more improvement. My camera quality seems a bit lower here compared to other platforms.

The presentation feature seems to be in need of improvement. It hards to view both the application and the presentation at the same time which makes it difficult to present at the same time.

    Alternatives Considered

Webex, Zoom Workplace, and Google Meet

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Teams

With someone using Microsoft already and as it is tied up with the other applications, you don't need to look any further when in need of a video conferencing platform and a hub for all your organization's needs.

Microsoft Teams - Great for team management

    Reviewed on 08/04/2024

    Pros

I love the ability to use Teams in many different ways including instant communication with my team and as a meeting scheduler (both in person and online).

    Cons

Occasionally the desktop app has bugs that make it hard to use. These problems do not happen regularly, but when they do, it can impact efficiency and productivity.

    Critical missing features

    Reviewed on 10/09/2022

    Pros

Teams brings it all into a one-stop shop for you, making it super-simple for you to create a comprehensive space for you and your team to work on common work together.

So if you're coming from the Skype environment, the idea of managing your contacts, chatting and calling, hosting and attending meetings, all from the same platform, is quite normal. But teams takes it just a little bit further and actually allows you to, not just share content, but store it and access it and collaborate and co-author it at the same time. Just a great opportunity there, really saves time.

    Cons

    Critical missing features namely:
1 Inability for co-organisers to moderate breakout rooms. This particular missing feature is the reason why people still are adamant to move away from zoom. I hope it could be introduced in the shortest time possible

    2. Inability to create a group without exposing members' details to other members of the group i.e a group or team where members cannot see details of each other's profile or members remain anonymous.
An example of this is when scheduling an interview and you do not want the applicants in the same group or team to interact. Microsoft Teams lacks this feature and makes it impossible to hold such discreet meeting of guest personalities whom you want to remain anonymous to each other during an interview

    Alternatives Considered

    Google Workspace

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Teams

It integrates other third-party applications, custom applications, and third-party hardware like click share, and Poly product to take the experience to another level. The shoot is one of my favourite apps on Microsoft Teams
